Apple Intelligence News Summaries Are Back, With A Big Red Disclaimer
Apple has released the fourth developer betas of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 and its other next-generation software updates today. And along with their other changes and fixes, the new builds are bringing back Apple Intelligence notification summaries for news apps.
Apple disabled news notification summaries as part of the iOS 18.3 update in January. Incorrect summaries circulating on social media prompted news organizations to complain to Apple, particularly after one summary said that Luigi Mangione, alleged murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had died by suicide (he had not and has not).
Upon installing the new update, users of Apple Intelligence-compatible devices will be asked to enable or disable three broad categories of notifications: those for "News & Entertainment" apps, for "Communication & Social" apps, and for all other apps. The operating systems will list sample apps based on what you currently have installed on your device.
All Apple Intelligence notification summaries continue to be listed as "beta," but Apple's main change here is a big red disclaimer when you enable News & Entertainment notification summaries, pointing out that "summarization may change the meaning of the original headlines." The notifications also get a special "summarized by Apple Intelligence" caption to further distinguish them from regular, unadulterated notifications.
Apple Intelligence Will Summarize News Again In IOS 26 After False Headline Debacle
The public beta of iOS 26 is coming this week, and with it the return of the Apple Intelligence notification summaries in the news and entertainment apps.
Apple turned off the summary feature in January after it was caught spewing fake BBC headlines. At the time Apple promised to make changes in a future update, before scrapping it completely from iOS 18.
The feature is supposed to group multiple notifications from the same news or entertainment app under a single sentence overview. The issues from earlier came when the AI pulled misleading or irrelevant details from the stories.
You may likeWith its return, Apple says it's improved the experience and quality of the summaries, starting with the fact that you can opt-in or opt-out on a per app basis.
If you're trying out the developer beta, once installed you should receive a pop up asking you to enable the notification summaries. The company also made changes that should reduce confusion around the news.
Now, AI-generated summaries will be italicized and appended with a "Summarized by Apple Intelligence" note. The original notifications can be revealed by tapping the summary.
Apple says that it will monitor the summaries throughout the beta process. The company has built in an option for users to report a concern if they discover any issues with a summary.
Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries are available on any Apple product that supports Apple Intelligence.
The public beta 26 for iOS 26 should launch before the end of July, possibly on July 23, which means that those of you who were waiting can potentially try the notifications feature in the bigger beta program.

IOS 26 Beta 4 Re-enables Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries For News Apps
Alongside new design changes, iOS 26 beta 4 also re-enables Apple Intelligence notification summaries for the News & Entertainment category of apps.
As you may remember, Apple disabled this feature in January after a handful of botched summaries went viral…
When you update to iOS 26 beta 4, you'll see a new setup flow that allows you to choose to enable notification summaries for the "News & Entertainment" category of apps. If you choose to enable summaries for News & Entertainment apps, you'll see a warning in bright red text: "Summarization may change the meaning of original headlines. Verify information." There is also an option to report concerns with notification summaries directly to Apple.
